SWLA Center for Health Services
SWLA Center for Health Services, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit community-based organization, incorporated in 1978. As a recipient of a 330 CHC grant, the Center began receiving Bureau of Primary Health Care funding in 1984. The Center operates facilities in Lake Charles, Lafayette, Crowley and Oberlin, Louisiana.
History
From humble beginnings in 1981, SWLA Center for Health Services, formally known as Bayou Comprehensive, has grown from one site with five employees to four sites with over two hundred employees and an annual budget of approximately $17 million.
Under the leadership and direction of the late CEO, Eric Taylor, SWLA Center for Health Services underwent many transformations including the addition of satellite sites in Crowley and Lafayette, Louisiana. Under the direction of our newest CEO, Mr. William Brent III, SWLA CHS has now added 3 extension sites in Lake Charles, 3 School Based Health Centers; located in Kaufman Elementary (Lake Charles), Carencro Middle School (Carencro) & Alice Boucher (Lafayette) and the SWLA Mobile Unit, which allows us to travel across Louisiana, providing medical and dental services to those outside of the areas we serve.
The Flagship health center (facility) campus in Lake Charles is 56,000 sf. The facility houses thirty (30) examination rooms, nine (9) state of the art dental operatories, a medical laboratory, a full service pharmacy, a WIC department, health education classrooms and one of the best equipped Fitness Centers in the city of Lake Charles. Due to the aftermath of Hurricane Laura and Hurricane Delta in 2020, the Lake Charles facility is now down to only 21,000 sq. ft. Because of these changes, SWLA CHS now has 3 extension sites in Lake Charles; located in JD Clifton Elementary School, SOWELA Technical Community College and inside the Imperial Health Building on Michael DeBakey drive, which allows us to continue to provide quality, cost-effective and comprehensive care to our patients. Plans for redevelopment are coming in 2023!
Doors to our Crowley site, a 6,000 sf facility, opened in August 2009. The 26,000 sf Lafayette site opened in January 2012 and the 6,200 sf Oberlin site opened in 2014.
Together, we have four locations serving multiple parishes in Louisiana. SWLA Center for Health Services is honored to serve our community (patients) with respect and dignity as we strive to provide the highest quality health care. We use a patient-centered approach and we are accredited by the Joint Commission of Health care Organization since 2006.
For over 4 decades, SWLA Center for Health Services has cared for the needs of the families in our community. We are grateful that you have taken this journey with us.
Welcome from our Chief Health Officer Dr. Tammy Mitchell
