SWLA Center for Health Services is a 501 (c) 3 not for profit community based organization. Milton J. Bellard, local community advocate and organizer, along with Judge Ulysses Gene Thibodeaux, organized and founded Bayou Comprehensive Health Foundation Incorporated in 1978.
Their goal was to organize a Community Health Center that would alleviate deplorable health conditions for some 23,000 residents living in North Lake Charles. In 1981, the corporation received a twenty-five thousand dollar grant and opened a free standing health clinic on Moeling Street with two physicians, Dr. Pamela Hollins and Dr. Reginald Sykes. The two physicians were supported by two clerical support staff and Mr. Bellard. In 1984, the health clinic received a Section 330 grant from the U.S. Public Health Service to operate a federally funded community health center (FQHC) in Southwest Louisiana.
From humble beginnings in 1981, the Health Center has grown from one site with five employees to four sites with over one hundred and sixty employees and an annual budget of approximately $16 million. Under the leadership and direction of the late CEO, Eric Taylor, SWLA Center for Health Services underwent many transformations including the addition of satellite sites in Crowley and Lafayette Louisiana. Our main Health Center Campus in Lake Charles is a modern 56,000 square foot facility. The facility houses thirty (30) examination rooms, nine (9) state of the art dental operatories, a medical laboratory, a full service pharmacy, expansive waiting rooms, conference rooms, health education classrooms and one of the best equipped Fitness Centers in the city of Lake Charles.
Doors to our Crowley site, a 6,000 square foot facility, opened in August 2009. Construction of our new 26,000 square foot site for Lafayette was completed and opened in January 2012. In April 2014, SWLA Center for Health Services opened its Oberlin, LA location, a 6,200 square foot facility, for a total of four locations serving multiple parishes in Louisiana.
SWLA Center for Health Services prides itself on the development and implementation of services for Southwest Louisiana communities in an environment that will serve them with respect and dignity and provide the highest quality of health care that is essential to the patient and reflects the essence of the health care profession. That is why we have sought and have been accredited by the Joint Commission of Health care Organization since 2006.
SWLA Center for Health Services will continue to work to increase access to primary and preventive health services in family medicine, women’s health, oral health, fitness and wellness, podiatry, and behavioral health.
For over 3 decades, SWLA Center for Health Services has cared for the needs of the families in our community. The professional staff is committed to providing high quality healthcare for all and our physicians are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week in case of emergency.
